FAQs: Cancel For Any Reason Travel Insurance Add-On

Are you booking a trip now that you want to protect in case you can't travel in the future?

The right travel insurance policy can give you the flexibility you need to change your travel plans when you don’t want to be left completely out of pocket.

Cover-More’s optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) add-on gives you the power to cancel your trip – whatever the reason – without ruining your finances. For example, you may not wish to travel to a certain location abroad because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, because you recently split with your travel partner, or because you can’t afford to travel any more. Yes, with our CFAR add-on to your travel insurance policy, the reason for cancelling doesn’t matter.

However, if you have already booked and paid for a trip, more than 48 hours ago, then CFAR may not be for you. Cover will only apply for travel costs that you paid for after buying this policy or if you paid for it in the 48 hours before the purchase date of this policy.

Also, you can only buy CFAR if your trip departure date is seven days or more in the future.

So, yes, there are terms and conditions for our CFAR add-on. However, once you have the cover in place, you can add more accommodation, transport or other items to your trip to be covered.

As long as you do so 14 days or more before your scheduled departure date.

And if you end up not being able to go, to be eligible for CFAR, you have to cancel 48 hours or more before your intended departure date. CFAR doesn't kick in if you leave it to the last minute to cancel.

If you need to make a claim under the CFAR cover because your claim isn't covered by the standard cancellation cover there are limits. The total benefit limit is $10,000 (or the amount of cancellation cover you chose, whichever is the lesser) and you will only receive up to 75% of your costs back, which means there will be a 25% amount of your claim, at a minimum, that you won't get back from us.

What is the Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance add-on?

Our CFAR add-on allows you to cancel your travel plans for any reason up to 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure date. When you purchase this add-on for an additional premium, you can cancel your trip for any reason that would normally be excluded by our travel insurance cancellation policies.

Your Cancel For Any Reason event could be:

  • you’re concerned about recent events at your travel destination – such as the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak – and want to postpone your trip

  • you haven’t had your leave approved at work, but want to book your holiday now

  • your friend or relative at home is quite frail and you’re worried they might pass away

  • you’re starting or looking for a new job and can no longer take your planned trip

  • you’ve had an unexpected expense and you can no longer afford to travel right now

...plus many more.

If I have cancellation cover, why do I need Cancel For Any Reason cover too?

Our general cancellation cover allows you to choose to insure your full trip value in case you need to cancel or amend your trip for an unforeseeable reason covered by your policy, such as an accidental injury or sudden illness.

Our Cancel For Any Reason add-on supplements your cancellation cover. Once you’ve chosen your level of cancellation cover, you can add the CFAR add-on to your policy as well. This optional extra allows you to cancel your trip up to 48 hours before your departure date for any reason not ordinarily covered under the cancellation section of your policy.

If you do choose to cancel your trip for any reason and the CFAR add-on is included in your travel insurance policy, you can receive reimbursement for up to 75% of your non-refundable prepaid travel costs or 75% of the cancellation cover you selected – whichever is lesser. However, your reimbursement will not exceed a total of $10,000.

When can I buy a policy with the Cancel For Any Reason add-on?

To include our CFAR add-on in your travel insurance policy, you must purchase your travel insurance policy and the add-on at the same time. The add-on cannot be added onto your travel insurance after the original purchase date.

To be eligible for including our CFAR add-on in your policy, you must also purchase your travel insurance policy more than seven days prior to your departure date.

As our Cancel For Any Reason cover is an add-on, it will incur an additional premium.

What travel costs does the Cancel For Any Reason add-on cover?

Our CFAR add-on covers up to 75% of the non-refundable portion of all unused prepaid travel costs or 75% of the Cancellation Cover you added to your policy – whichever is the lesser amount. We will not pay more than $10,000 per policy.

However, this only applies if the travel costs and the cancellation of your trip occur within the periods shown below.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

If you have purchased a travel insurance policy with our Cancel For Any Reason add-on, you must ensure you cancel your trip with all the relevant travel providers and lodge your claims at least 48 hours prior to your departure time for cover to apply.

For details on how to make a claim, we recommend you read the claim instructions included with your policy documents.
